Abbotsford Nursing home opened on 20 February 1986 with
24 beds. It now has 35 beds. Before it became a nursing home, it was owned by
Doctor Beaton, a local general practitioner. He bought the house from the Hogarth
family who ran the Hogarth Shipping Company. The house was originally called the
'The Garth'.
On 11 December 1921, the first transatlantic radio signals
were received near Abbotsford Nursing Home. A plaque
on the wall of the home commemorates the event.
