Ardrossan Castle Carnival 2016 105, Castle Hill 18
June 2016
The first Ardrossan Castle Carnival was held on 18 June 2016 to commemorate
the meeting of the Privy Council in Ardrossan exactly 470 years earlier on 18
June 1546. The Privy Council was the equivalent of the Cabinet of the Scottish
Government. The meeting was chaired by Lord James Hamilton, regent to the four-year-old
Mary, Queen of Scots, and effective King of Scotland. The celebration was hosted
by Ardrossan Castle Heritage Society.
The horse joust was opened by Lord Hugh and Countess Mariota Montgomerie, owners
of Ardrossan Castle in 1546. Alastair Morriarty, holding the shield, and Nicole
Postlethwaite, wearing the green dress, acted as the Lord and Countess. They
are flanked by Ardrossan Castle Heritage Society members Alison Montgomery on
the left and Amanda Simpson.
