The last Baron of Ardrossan was Sir Fergus Barclay, also called Sir Fergus of Ardrossan, and known as the De’il o’ Ardrossan.
Fergus lived probably sometime between 1250 and 1330. He was a skilled horseman and according to legend 'leapt over the Castle of Ardrossan with one of his horses, the print of the horse shoe still shown on the base of the Castle, north side, as proof'. He is buried in the nearby church and is commemorated by a monumental stone.
