Montfode Fuel Depot 6 11
September 2004
During the Second World War, the Shell Oil Refinery
in North Crescent Road was an
obvious bombing target. To minimise the risk of loss, several underground
tanks were build near Montfode Farm in early 1943. Fuel was pumped to
the tanks along underground pipes from the refinery. A railway siding was
built for access to the tanks. The tanks were partially dismantled
in the early 1990s but their outline remains. If you know accurate
dates, please contact WebsiteAuthor@ArdrossanPhotographs.net.
Further details on the Montfode Fuel Depot can be seen on the Secret
Scotland website.
