Tank Traps, Glasgow Street 3 18
September 2005
The metal plates on the pavement in Glasgow
Street
near the Cafe Palazzo are the covers of tank traps,
made by R Simpson of Hurlford. Originally, they spanned the full width of the
road but were removed when the road was resurfaced. When
the plates are lifted, reinforced concrete posts, some pyramid shaped, can be
placed in the holes. The traps were intended to stop tanks making progress along
the road during the second world war. There are other
tank traps in Dalry Road and
there were some on the roads near Ardrossan Harbour but they have been removed.
Further
tank trap plates can be seen on the pavements in Ardrossan Road, Saltcoats near
the Registrar's Office and the Baptist Church. If you can provide more information
on the tank traps, please contact WebsiteAuthor@ArdrossanPhotographs.net.
